Renting and Moving: skills checklist
Renting your first place and moving into it is a string of small jobs that nobody explains in order: how much rent you can carry, what to test on a viewing, how to tell a real listing from a fake one, what to have ready when you apply, and what to record on move-in day so the deposit comes back a year later. Most people learn each of these by getting one wrong.
This category walks through the whole cycle. You will learn to search on a budget and tour with a checklist, spot a rental scam, put together an application packet, document the unit before a box comes in, understand renters insurance, set ground rules with a roommate, set up utilities and ask for repairs the way a lease expects. Then comes the move itself: packing, lifting and carrying safely, loading a truck, hiring movers without being held to ransom, changing your address, cleaning on the way out and getting the deposit back.
Tenant law differs by state and city, so these pages explain the terms and the paper trail, not your legal rights in a dispute. Where a landlord will not fix something serious or keeps a deposit without reason, each page points you to a local tenant rights group.
