The twelve guides

How the guides are written

Every guide opens with the direct answer, the paragraph you would want if you only read one. After that come the details: the order to learn things in, a worked example, the mistakes people make most, and where the job stops being a do-it-yourself job. The voice is the one a patient older brother or a good shop teacher would use. Nobody is expected to know this already, because most people were never shown.

Of the 224 skills, 102 are everyday skills with little risk, 90 need some care because a careless step can cause an injury or damage, and 32 are safety critical. Those last ones are tightly scoped, point you to a certified class or a professional, and carry a box that lists exactly when to stop and call one. Some popular list items are left out altogether, because a wrong step taught in text can hurt someone.

Using the guides with the checklist

The guides pair with the skills checklist, where you tick what you already know, and with today's skill, which picks one skill a day by your local date. If you like working from paper, the printable checklist guide shows how to print a category at a time. Everything you tick stays in your browser.

If a guide says something that disagrees with a professional who can see your situation, or with current official guidance, follow them, and tell us through the support address in the footer so the page can be fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Which guide should I read first?

The master guide, things every man should know how to do. It lays out all seventeen categories and the starter 20, and links to the other guides where they go deeper.

How are the guides different from the skill pages?

A skill page teaches one task in a few minutes. A guide covers a whole area, such as the car or the kitchen, explains the order to learn things in, and links to each skill page.

Are the guides free?

Yes. Every guide and every skill page is free to read, with no account, and safety and health content is never behind a paywall.
