How to say no
When your manager asks you to cover another weekend shift, or a friend asks for help moving for the third time this year, you can say no without a long excuse. Buy time first, let me check and get back to you tonight, then give a short, clear no, with a reason only if you want. Offer an alternative if you mean it, and repeat calmly if pushed.

How to do it
- Notice your automatic yes and pause before answering.
- Buy time: let me check my week and get back to you tonight.
- Decide based on your time, energy and priorities, not guilt.
- Say no clearly and kindly: I cannot cover Saturday this time.
- Keep any reason short, or give none; long excuses invite negotiation.
- Offer an alternative only if you truly want to: I could do two hours Sunday afternoon.
- If pushed, repeat the same answer calmly without adding new reasons.
Common mistakes
- Saying maybe when you mean no, which leaves people waiting.
- Over-explaining with a list of excuses.
- Saying yes and then resenting it or backing out late.
- Apologizing for having limits.
