How to measure neck, sleeve, waist and inseam
To measure your sizes, use a soft tape and a helper: neck around the base where a collar sits, plus a finger's room; sleeve from the center back of your neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist bone; waist where your trousers sit; and inseam from the crotch seam to the hem of trousers that fit. Write the numbers on your phone and recheck yearly.

How to do it
- Get a soft tape measure and, ideally, someone to help with the sleeve and inseam.
- Measure your neck around its base where a shirt collar sits, with one finger under the tape for room.
- Measure your sleeve from the center of the back of your neck, across the shoulder and down to your wrist bone, arm slightly bent.
- Measure your chest around the fullest part, under your arms, with the tape level.
- Measure your waist where your trousers actually sit, not where a chart assumes.
- Measure the inseam on trousers that fit well, from the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem.
- Save the numbers on your phone and on the readiness notes, and remeasure once a year.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the tape tight to get a smaller number.
- Measuring over a bulky sweater.
- Assuming the size on your old jeans matches your real waist.
- Measuring sleeve from the shoulder seam instead of the center back of the neck for shirts.
