How to clean gutters safely

To clean gutters safely on a single-story home, set the ladder by the four-to-one rule and scoop debris into a bucket, staying within easy reach. Wear gloves and use a plastic scoop. How to do it

  1. Check the forecast for a dry, calm day and have someone at home while you work.
  2. Set up the ladder on firm ground by the four-to-one rule, never leaning it on the gutter itself unless it has a stand-off.
  3. Hang a bucket from a rung with a hook, and wear gloves and eye protection.
  4. Scoop leaves and sludge into the bucket from where you stand, moving the ladder often instead of reaching.
  5. Run a garden hose along the gutter toward the downspout and watch the water flow out at the bottom.
  6. If the downspout is blocked, flush it from the bottom up or push a plumber's snake through it.
  7. Look for sagging sections, loose brackets and leaking joints, and note them for repair.
  8. Do it at least twice a year, after the leaves fall and in spring.

Stop and call a professional if

  • The gutters are on a second story or higher, or the roof is steep: hire a gutter service.
  • The service line to the house runs anywhere near the ladder or gutter.
  • Gutters sag, pull away from the fascia, or you see rot behind them.
  • Any fall, even a short one with a bang to the head: get checked by a doctor.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning out sideways to reach one more handful.
  • Walking on the roof to reach the gutter from above.
  • Resting the ladder on a flimsy gutter that can bend or break away.
  • Using a metal ladder near the power line to the house.
