How to do it

  1. Check care labels for the wash temperature and whether the item can be tumble dried.
  2. Sort into darks, lights and whites, and heavy items such as towels, and wash new dark or red items on their own the first time.
  3. Empty pockets, close zippers and turn graphic tees and dark jeans inside out.
  4. Choose cold for everyday clothes and warm for towels, sheets and very dirty work clothes.
  5. Measure detergent by the line on the cap for your load size, using high-efficiency detergent in a machine that needs it.
  6. Fill the drum loosely, no more than about three quarters full.
  7. Move clothes to the dryer promptly, use low heat for knits and anything that can shrink, and hang shirts straight away.
  8. Clean the lint screen before or after every dryer load.

Common mistakes

  • Washing a new red shirt with whites.
  • Using extra detergent, which leaves residue and does not clean better.
  • Hot drying wool and cotton knits until they shrink.
  • Leaving wet laundry in the machine overnight, which sours it.
  • Skipping the lint screen, a common cause of dryer fires.

Quick self-check

Three questions. Your last score is kept in this browser.

1. Which water temperature suits most everyday clothes?
2. Why clean the lint screen every load?
3. What does using more detergent than the cap line do?
