How to install a car seat
To install a car seat, read both the seat's manual and the car's manual, fit the seat in the back, rear-facing for as long as the seat's limits allow, using either the lower anchors or the seat belt as the manuals say. It should move less than an inch at the belt path. Then have a certified child passenger safety technician check it, which is free in most areas.

How to do it
- Register the seat with its maker so you hear about recalls, and check its expiration date.
- Read the car seat manual and the car-seat section of your vehicle's manual before you start.
- Install it in the back seat, never in front of an active airbag.
- Keep the child rear-facing until they reach the seat's rear-facing height or weight limit.
- Use the lower anchors or the seat belt to install it, not both unless the manual allows it, and lock the belt as the manual shows.
- Press down on the seat with your weight and tighten until it moves less than an inch side to side at the belt path.
- Set the recline angle to the seat's indicator for the child's weight and age.
- Buckle the child with harness straps snug, the chest clip at armpit level, and no puffy coat underneath.
- Book a free check with a certified child passenger safety technician.

Common mistakes
