What to say

Back up your phone by switching on the automatic cloud backup in its settings, making sure photos, contacts, messages and app data are included, and checking the date of the last successful backup. If you run out of cloud space, add more or copy photos to a computer or drive every month. A backup you have never checked might not be there when the phone is gone.

What to show, in order

1. Open your phone's settings and find the backup section under your account name or the system menu.
2. Switch on automatic backup and pick what it covers: photos, contacts, messages, app data and settings.
3. Plug in and connect to your home network overnight so the first full backup can finish.
4. Check the last backup date the next morning.
5. Add storage or move old videos off the phone if the backup reports it is out of space.
6. Copy your photos to a computer or an external drive once a month as a second copy.
7. Write down the account and password the backup lives in, and store it in your password manager.
